Today I caught wind of Samsung’s new LCD announcement. Since information I’ve posted on the Sony XBR 8 LED model I’ve been wondering if Samsung will bring out a new LED model. Now we have something to look forward to from Samsung, the 9-Series.

It looks like Samsung is using its marketing techniques on inflated contrast ratios and touts an astronomical contrast of 1 Million, thats right Contrast Ratio of 1,000,000:1. Just when we were adjusting to the 7 Series 50,000 Samsung puts out probably the highest dynamic contrast number in the commercial market of LCDs.

Here is what we know. The sizes that will be available will be 46″ and 55″ just like the Sony XBR 8. The estimated price for the 46″ is $3,200 & the 55″ going for $4,200. The estimated arrival for these sets is around late August early September of 2008.

Now for specifications. They both will be extremely similar in design of the 7-Series out now with the Touch of Color design. As know the unbelievable contrast ration of 1 million to one. Now what really sets this television apart from the last years 81 series LED model is the fact that it will sport 120 Hz. The combination of 120 Hz technology and LED back lighting is new for Samsung. This will also mean that 9 Series will be in direct competition with Sony’s XBR 8 that will be released around the same time. The television will have 4ms response time, Smart LED Local Dimming just like the old 81 series, Samsung Ultra Clear Panel which means it will have some glare on the screen, DNIE Pro, and Wide Color Enhancer 2. As for inputs goes it will have 4 HDMI 1.3 inputs, 2 Component inputs, 1 composite, 1 s-video, 1 headphone jack, and PC input. Just like all the new Samsung’s it will have a USB input for flash drives to display pictures, play mp3s, and even support XviD & Mpeg 4’s. Also the television will have an Ethernet input for the new Info Link technology that allows for RSS feeds delivered to the TV. The 46″ version will have two speakers that are 10 watts per channel and built in sub woofer like the 7 Series. The 55″ version will have two speakers as well but with 15 watts per channel and built in sub woofer as well.

I believe the Samsung 9 Series and Sony XBR 8 will be the TV to own this year. The question is who is going to provide the darkest blacks and working 120Hz technology. Ultimately this might be great news as far as price. This may discourage Sony from inflating their price but then again who are we kidding… One thing I’m quite looking forward to is to see how deep these blacks will be. Will these new LED models bring competition to high end plasma’s like the Pioneer Elite or Panasonics 850U? Something tells me that the Pioneer will still remain king of blacks for its last plasma model. It will be interesting to see what lays ahead for next year. Will we see Mitsubishi’s Laser TV be on top, Sony & Samsung’s OLEDs in large sizes, or will we see the beginning of FED televisions.

Who do you think will take the title for the 2008 LED models? Sony? Samsung? Anyone else?

One thing is for sure television shopping hasn’t gotten easier with the Sony XBR 8 LED & Samsung 9 Series.

Finally Samsung came out with another color TV besides gloss black –which I can’t stand. I like the charcoal grey. But now the problem is that it isn’t offered in a 40-42 inch. Sucks to be me. I can’t find a decent non-black LCD. The new silver Sony Z series is nice but the picture isn’t.

Hi there, i actually have the samsung 81F 46in LCD and it does have the 120Hz refresh rate, so what i am confused about is that in your comments you say it doesn’t and that samsung with its new 9 series will have it. But they already did, so whats up? If you go to Crutchfield, or Onecall.com they had listed on their speces. Even at CNet.com too. Am i missing something here?

The Samsung LNT4681F does NOT have 120Hz. I’ve check CNet.com and AVSforum too double check. Both state that it is 60 Hz. That was a major disappointment with the 81 series. The 71 series had 120Hz but the 81 didn’t. The difference was that the 81 used LED instead of CCFL.
