Recently I’ve been wanting to do something artistic. About a month ago we were in a Urban Outfitters and the Marvel Bobble Head looking figures caught my eye. I’ve seen them at Target while shopping around for legos and random toys. The next thing that really caught my eye and lit a light bulb in my head was this weird vinyl toy figure. They had all sorts of sizes of the toys. It was something I wish I had bought but wasn’t completely sold on it. After awhile I was remind of them and google imaged vinyl toy and doll and found out that the creature was Munny. They had a ton of gallery’s of custom Munnys. The gallerys blew me AWAY. It instantly became something I wanted to do. This was going to be my new art project. I knew that I had to have an idea of what I wanted to do before I ordered one. After a week of thought I came up with making a Starcraft Marine. I realized this would be a serious task to design and I have never really worked with paint. I realized that I should chose something that would be a lot easier as my first Munny. Then as I was at work it hit me! Toon Link! At work Nikki has this vinyl doll that is piggie bank, Don Don. They call it link hound at work or the link idol. Since my job title is Link Builder and have printed images of Link by my desk. I googled images of link and thought Toon Link would be the perfect Munny to design for me. Real simple yet so bad ass. The black Munny discouraged me for Link since it meant I had to paint the whole doll. Then I searched some images of Ganondorf and bingo the Ganondorf of Wind Waker would be perfect!
I tried searching some tips for customizing Munny’s but found nothing that helpful. You see a ton of unbelievable customs but nothing on making them. I’d love to find a step by step page on how the great ones are made. Not to mention a list of tools they used and type of medium they use. I figured I’d just show up at Pearl Art Store and find something. Ended up buying cheap acrylic paint in the kids section, big mistake. I should of bought brushes at least but figured we had tons at home. Yeah we do but no really fine brushes to make lines with. I also bought some Sharpie Fine Pens but ended up not working over the acrylic paint. I ended up buying a mini Munny to be my test dummy. They only had pink so I figured I first try out making a miniature Link. The acrylic went on smoothly and decided I could accomplish this one with ease. I completed the miniature and moved onto the bigger Munny. Since Ganondorf has a large portion of black I decided it would be best just to paint the clothes and leave majority of the Munny black. It was a lot more difficult painting on it since it was black and would need multiple layers of paint.
Eventually when the night had ended I was all done. The most difficult part was the fine details. The eyes on the miniature link eyes never got done and neither did the Ganondorfs face. I need to find something to create details over the acrylic paint.
Nikki took some photos and videos while I was working on the Munnys. I’ll be posting them soon. I just finished adding them into the Photos section. Have to figure out the width code later today.
