Anyone that has been over the apartment, been on a car ride with us, or someone who watches my Last.FM track list should know my intensive interest in Dubstep. I’ve always been into electronic music it seems. I’ve had my phases of Trance, Breaks, Drum & Bass, IDM, etc… Recently a friend of Nikki’s, Derek, introduced her to dubstep. Didn’t think much of it till we got in the car and heard the sub kick like I’ve never heard. I was completely blown away but the lows and manipulations of bass, which I know know is called a bass wobble. Since when I get into something I try to learn everything I can and hear as much of it as I could. Literally I can tell you that I’ll probably like most dubstep songs even if I know they are forgettable. After a month of listening to all the dubstep live sets I could find online I got a decent idea of the main tracks, DJs, & Producers I really enjoyed.
WMC couldn’t have come around at a more perfect time. Unfortunately I didn’t get to goto all the events I wanted too: Benga, Skream, Mala, & others… BUT I did get out to the ViRam event. I was a bit disappointed how the dubstep room was going down when we first goto to Soho but figured it was too early and mostly Dub was being played. I will say there is a difference between Dub and Dubstep. I’m no expert but the way I look at it is if it’s more of a reggae feel too it and mellow it’s Dub. If you get really hard hitting bass with a higher BPM too it, it’s Dubstep. Towards the end of the John B set I was realizing that he’s sticking to the whole 80s eletro mix and not switching it up too his Drum & Bass roots I left to check out the Dubstep room. WOW! Totally blown away. Perfect timing because Plastician had just taken over the decks. I knew that dubstep would be a whole difference experience with serious bass, boy never did I think it was going to be such an experience and feeling the bass just pass through your body. I remember going crazy, dancing, and having the time of my life. It seem like it would never stop and I have to say he must of gone on for a good two hours it seemed since Joe Nice didn’t make it. Track after track kept blowing up and honestly have to see it was one of the best live experiences of my life.
If you have a nice sub, tower speakers, good headphones, subs in your car, or just overall good lows on your system go check out some Dubstep. I’ve posted some YouTube videos of some of the classic of the genre and some of my favorites. Hope you enjoy!
My favorites are: Plastician, Babylon System, Tes La Rok, Skream, Caspa, Rusko, & Benga
