Recently I’ve seen tons of things on the web mentioning Last.fm. Nikki uses as her homepage and friends have asked if I’m on it. Sure enough today I found sometime to check it out.

This is what I’ve gather from it so far after awhile from using it. You create a user and setup a profile. You have the option of downloading software to install which keeps log of all the music you listen too. I was weary since I usually listen to my iPod from iTunes and not directly from the harddrive. Sure enough when I went to go check the site it was keeping track of everything I had played. It literally keeps track of all the tracks you’ve listened too as long as you have iTunes playing and connected to the internet. Has all sorts of fun statistics that it creates based on what you listen too.

The reason why Nikki uses last.fm for a homepage is because of the events page. It creates a list of current shows/events going on in your area. Let’s you mark if you’re attending and able to see anyone else who is going to the event. Its a nice way to keep up to date on things since its a pain sometimes going on Ticketmaster or getting those pesky newsletters from all sorts of places.

The most promising part of last.fm too me is the fact that since its a social network it allows you to add friends that also have a profile. This lets you check out what your friends are listening too and might turn you on too some music you might of not heard of. This is a big plus to me since I’m a big music collector and always like too check out new stuff. Something else that surprised me was how it actually suggest too you new music based on what you’ve played. Also if you click on the track that was played a bunch of information pops up about the artist. It gives you artist that are related and others that also listen to the particular artist.

Some of the other features the sites contains but doesn’t really interest me is radio stations, top music videos, and top artist of the week. One thing that surprised me it even has a section where you can download certain tracks for free.

I plan on adding a Last.fm widget to the site just to show some of the music I’m currently listening too. Seems like something fun to add to the site. If you want to add me my user name is, jayxem.
